Bharatpur

Introduction
Founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD, Bharatpur is often described as the 'Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan'. An impregnable well-fortified city of yore, it was carved out of the region formerly known as Mewat. The origin of Bharatpur's name is inspired by the name of Bharat, brother of Lord Rama. The dominance of Jat leaders as Churaman and Badan Singh during Mughal period brought the city into limelight. Bharatpur tour has emerged as a prime tourist destination recently thanks to its splendid fort, palace and other valuable edifices besides intrinsic colorful Rajasthani culture.
 
Places to Visit in Bharatpur
» Keoladeo National Park : The best duck shooting resort of British period, this heaven of bird watchers was recognized as a reserve for birds in 1956 and later upgraded as a National Park. The park was included among World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Countless number of birds start their roost and nest activities on Babool and Kadam trees of the park before monsoon. Saras Cranes, Grey Heron, Egret, White Ibis, Spoonbill and Night Heron are some of the attractions of the park.

» Iron Fort : The fort which bore number of attacks of British successfully, justifies its name. The fort doesn't bear any flamboyance with it unlike other forts in the state. Even though it creates the aura of magnificence and strength. Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas are some of the monuments enveloped by fort.

» Government Museum : This museum was basically Kamra Khas within the fort. You will get to see a rich and priceless collection of exquisite sculptures, antiques and some ancient inscriptions in this museum. The fort remains opened between 10 am to 4 pm.

» The Palace : The Palace was built by various Maharajas in different phases. It has a refined combination of Mughal and Rajput architecture. Almost all the apartments are beautifully decorated with patterned floor tiles and beautiful designs. A museum is also there in the main central wing of the palace.

Some Excursions
You can visit deeg, 34 km North of Bharatpur, is a beautiful garden town. Main attractions of the town include lush gardens, gargling fountains and spectacular palaces. Bhanwar Vilas Palace is located in Karauli near Bharatpur.The Kishan Bhawan is famous for a large water reservoir on its roof.

How to Reach Bharatpur
Agra Airport, 54 km, is the nearest airport from the city. Daily flights operate for Agra. The Bharatpur lies on the main Delhi-Mumbai rail line and linked with Agra. So, it's esily apprachable from by train journey. It is well-connected by road with other major city centres. Here you can ride any of the buses and taxis, plying regularly for Bharatpur.
